About Us

Happy surfers on the beach at beadnell

Why is NE Surf “not just any surf school?”

At NE surf we are passionate surfers and educators. Firstly, we have so much FUN in the water ourselves, that both children and adults who surf with us can’t help feeling the same. Our instructors have a unique set of skills; we are creative, adaptive and reactive in our approach to delivering the best quality surfing lessons our region has to offer. Our group sizes are kept small to ensure that each surfer can receive personalised tuition and achieve their personal surfing goals. We’re here to support and guide you at your own pace. Ultimately, what makes our lessons stand out from the rest is that we don’t just teach you how to stand up on a surfboard, we teach you to surf.

How we started

NE surf was established by Chris and Emily who both have years of experience both surfing and teaching.

Chris has worked in surf camps across the world, from Sri Lanka to Norway, and has worked with outstanding coaches to develop his own engaging and fun teaching style. He is a stickler for technique and will quickly identify any small tweaks needed to boost your surfing to the next level. Chris is an ISA level 2 surf coach and can coach from complete beginner up to competitive surfers.

Emily has spent her entire adult life teaching in a variety of forms. As well as  surf instructing she has taught horse riding in Australia and is a qualified secondary school maths teacher. The application of her unique set of teaching skills gives clarity to Emily’s surf lessons, as she is able to adapt her teaching style and pace to suit the individual learner.

But don’t just take our word for it…

I can’t say thanks enough to Chris and Angus who ran a great beginners’ surf lesson at Beadnell. I have a lot of limitation due to a bad ankle break a few years ago and had only attempted to surf once before with another surf school with very little success. But their coaching and stance adaptations really helped. Their clarity of instruction, patience and encouragement was fantastic and I will definitely be back soon. Fantastic instruction, tailored to your needs. I would recommend anyone looking at getting into water sports give these lessons a go!

Safe and Professional

All of our instructors are fully qualified, Surfing England accredited surf coaches and have up to date SLSGB lifeguard qualifications. We teach private lessons, beginner, intermediate and advanced group lessons, as well as running sessions for businesses, schools and groups within the community.

We aim to use our skills to support outreach programmes within the community, using surfing as a vehicle to encourage mindfulness and to positively impact on mental health and wellness.

Please send us an email if you have a project or collaboration in mind.

Bamburgh and Northumberland

Our lessons usually take place on the beautiful Bamburgh Beach, an area of outstanding natural beauty and host to ideal waves for learning to surf. It is the most consistent surf spot in the area, although we do have a few other locations if conditions happen to be less ideal at Bamburgh (we will get in touch if that is the case). We can’t wait to share with you the joy of surfing in Northumberland. See you soon!

surfing on the Northumberland coast

My family had a surf lesson this summer with Emily. All 5 of us got up on the board FIRST TIME! We had a blast. Emily’s choice of technique is better than any other surf school I’ve tried and her instruction style is excellent. We would have had lessons every day and we’ll most certainly be back! Excellent service all round from initial inquiry to follow up lessons and board/wetsuit hire.
